Delvigne's chambered breech
1826Percussion Revolution
French captain Henri-Gustave Delvigne attacks the rifle's great military weakness — slow loading — with a narrowed powder chamber that lets an undersized ball drop freely down the bore, then deform into the rifling under ramrod taps. Trialed in Algeria and abandoned by 1830, it opens the expanding-bullet line of inquiry that ends in the Minié ball.
