The History of Song credits the generals Yue Yifang and Feng Jisheng with a fire arrow that used a tube of gunpowder as a propellant rather than a mere incendiary, the earliest claimed self-propelled rocket. Some historians argue practical rockets arrived only later, since the recorded powder formulas of the era were ill-suited to propulsion.
