Xanadu Gun
1298Dawn of Gunpowder
Recovered from the ruins of the Mongol summer capital, the bronze Xanadu Gun carries an inscription dating it to 1298, making it the oldest surviving firearm whose age is fixed by its own markings rather than by context. At roughly 35 cm and 6 kg it typifies the small hand cannons of the late thirteenth century.
