London Gunmakers' Company chartered

1637Flintlock Era

Charles I charters the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers with power to search, gauge, prove, and mark firearms made around London, after cheaply made barrels kept bursting in shooters' hands. The company's proof house — operating by 1657 — still stamps barrels today, the oldest firearms-safety institution in the English-speaking world.
