Rifling appears

c. 1498Matchlock Era

Grooved barrels emerge in German-speaking Europe — Vienna's Gaspard Kollner is credited around 1498 — at first as straight channels to trap powder fouling, with spiral grooves to spin the bullet following within a generation. Hand-cut one groove at a time, rifling stays a luxury for hunters and marksmen for the next three and a half centuries.
